Built in 1929 by architects Pleasants Pennington and Albert Lewis, 1 East End Avenue was constructed on a wedge-shaped block along the East River, between 79th and 80th Streets. The building is among the most elegant on East End Avenue and is considered one of the great apartment houses of the pre-war era. The building has fifteen floors and 32 apartments, all of which are large — eight, nine, eleven and thirteen rooms. The apartments offer grand living space and fine views to the west, south and of the East River. Nearby are Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion and a number of private schools.
